4. Malt Mill

Grain is milled to break the husks (but without pulverizing the kernel). The milling process is important as the husks interlock in the mash to form a sort of strainer. If the grain is milled too coarsely, the kernel won't be properly exposed to water; too finely and you'll get a cloudy mash or a stuck runoff.
